Leaving a Gift to Tonbridge

Every donation, of every size helps to make a difference. Find a way to support the school that suits you, from a monthly gift, offering support where the school needs it most, to remembering us in your will with a legacy gift, helping to secure bursaries in perpetuity. However you choose to support, you will be helping transform the lives of Tonbridge boys now, and in the future.

Gift of Assets, Shares & Securities

Donations of any kind are so valuable to Tonbridge, so thank you for your support.

Shares & Securities

Individuals can obtain a double form of tax relief by donating gifts of equities. The market value of the gift can be offset against any income tax liability and in addition the gift would be exempt from any liability for Capital Gains Tax. For example, if you give Tonbridge £1,000 worth of shares, and you are a higher rate taxpayer, you will pay £400 less in income tax that year.

Additionally, you will not have to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on any increase in the value of the shares since you bought them. This could mean a further saving. If shares you donate have gone down in value, you should be aware that you will not be able to use this loss to offset any other CGT liability you have.

As Tonbridge is unable to give you financial advice we would urge you to talk to your financial advisor about the tax implications of donating shares. Further guidance notes relating to the donation of shares, Securities and Assets are available from the Development Office. For more information, or to discuss any aspect of support, please contact:

Assets

Tonbridge School Foundation can accept gifts of assets, such as property, land or other objects, which are not subject to Capital Gains Tax or Capital Transfer Tax. Donors may consider making a bequest of cash investments or other assets, all of which would be free of Capital Transfer Tax on death.
Tax relief can be claimed through donations of property when no interest in the property is retained. This can be through:
  • Income tax relief on the value of the donated property.
  • Exemption from capital gains tax on the increase in value of the donated property since first acquired, and reduced capital gains tax when property is sold at less than market value.
  • Exemption from inheritance tax.

Further guidance notes relating to the donation of shares, Securities and Assets are available from the Development Office. For more information, or to discuss any aspect of support, please contact:

Legacies

The Judde Society, established as a way of saying thank you to those who have decided to or intend to leave Tonbridge a legacy, is always pleased to welcome new members.

Members will receive a Judde Society tie, are invited to special school events throughout the year, such as the annual Headmaster’s Summer Drinks, and will have the opportunity to lunch in their old school house throughout the school year. We look forward to welcoming all members and their families to join us for Carols in Chapel, mulled wine and mince pies, on Sunday 9th December 2018.

In addition to the impact such gifts have on the school, any sum you bequeath to Tonbridge is not only free of tax, it may also reduce the overall tax liability due on your estate.

Leave a Legacy

If you decide to leave a legacy to Tonbridge, we would be grateful if you could notify us by completing this Legacy Gift Form. This is not a requirement but it does assist the School in its long term financial planning. If you have already made your will it is simple to add a codicil by downloading this form. When making a bequest in your will, please note that the beneficiary should be the Tonbridge School Foundation, Registered Charity No 1099162.

Legacies of all sizes are always appreciated and the School will never ask how much you have pledged, unless you wish to tell us. The generosity of legacies are recorded in the Annual Report.

For more information, or to discuss any aspect of this further in confidence, please contact:

Tara Biddle
Judde Society Manager

Making a will is an important step and it is recommended that you seek independent professional legal advice.

A Personal perspective

A Personal Perspective

My parents sacrificed a lot for me to go to Tonbridge and, as my business became more successful, it gave them a great deal of pleasure to know that my education had given me such a good start. I have included the Tonbridge School Foundation in my will because I believe I owe a lot of my success and happiness to the school and I would like others to benefit in the same way as I did.

Enhancing your gift

Gift Aid

By gift aiding your contribution we can reclaim an additional 25p in every £1, making your gift worth even more at no extra cost to you. Gift Aid is an invaluable source of ‘extra’ income. If you qualify, please fill in the Gift Aid declaration form as it enables us to reclaim 25p from HM Revenue and Customs for every £1 donated.

Higher rate tax payers donating through Gift Aid can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax and the basic rate of tax on the total value of their donation to Tonbridge School Foundation via their Self Assessment Form.

We reclaim the tax by forwarding details of your gift to the Inland Revenue. The table below outlines the benefits of giving for higher-rate tax payers.

Matched Giving

Many companies help charities through a matched giving scheme. Some will match pound for pound, and others will double match any donations which its employees make to registered charities. Please check with your Payroll or HR department as to whether your company do operate such a scheme as this could make your donation worth even more.

Inland Revenue Yearly Repayment

If as a result of your tax assessment the Inland Revenue is required to make a payment to you, the IR offers UK taxpayers the opportunity to nominate a charity to receive what may be an unexpected repayment. The School Foundation is registered with this scheme and if you need further information please contact the Development Office.
