Widening Access

We believe in the power of education to transform lives. Tonbridge School was founded by Sir Andrew Judde in 1553 with the specific purpose of educating 50 poor scholars. Over time, this philanthropic ethos has evolved into a programme that provides over £2m each year in fee remission for scholarships and bursaries.

Educational opportunity is one of the key challenges facing our society. The income gap between the richest and poorest continues to widen, and education opportunities remain overwhelmingly dominated by children from the most privileged homes. Tonbridge recognises the role we must play to tackle this issue.
As someone who benefitted from an assisted place, I recognise the importance of making it possible for bright boys, whatever their background our financial circumstances, to be able to come to a school like Tonbridge.

why bursaries matter

YOUR IMPACT

Inclusivity and diversity are central themes of our educational philosophy: ‘Only Connect’. We know that the benefits to the whole Tonbridge community, and beyond, are deeply enhanced and enriched with a student body that more accurately reflects the world in which they live and the world that they enter when they leave.

Impact on Teaching

Inclusivity and diversity at Tonbridge School matters, enriching our teaching and helping our boys move from asking the right questions to challenging the answers.

Impact on Old Boys

A great education can transform a boy’s life, and we hope that in return, it will enable him to
transform the lives of others.

Impact on Families

The boys who take up our Foundation Awards at Tonbridge enrich our School, and are able to benefit from the incredible opportunities a Tonbridge education can provide.

There is so much more we can do with your help. If you have seen or experienced the transformative power of a Tonbridge education, help us to hold open the door to future Tonbridge boys by offering your support.
